Historic Roof & Chimney Restoration on Home Built in 1728 – Kingston, NY – Case Study

by Alfandre Architecture

About the project...

We designed the restoration, preservation and repair of the roof and chimneys for this beautiful, historic, house located within the Stockade District of the City of Kingston, New York.

The stone section of the home was built in 1728.  A large frame addition was constructed in the 19th century.  The roof has many gables, chimneys and a complicated gutter system. The complexity and historical nature of the restoration work required a high level of care of craftsmanship.

We worked closely with the owners, and the team from the City of Kingston's Landmarks Preservation Commission, to make sure we recreated, and preserved, the architectural features of this lovely, historic home.

The fascia and roof were replaced at the front entrance. We diverted the water in different directions to prevent all of it from going to one place.

After completion, the owners of the house were given the Preservation Award from the Friends of Historic Kingston, who happen to be located near the home, for the roof repair.

We extended the roof and wall to prevent the water from landing into the wall causing major water damage. The new design controls the water more effectively.

The details of the roofs and chimneys were in very poor shape.  The roof was leaking in multiple places prior to it's repair.

The old existing chimneys were severly damaged, as was the roof. We replaced them with similar, newer chimneys so they didn't let any unwanted air into the building.

Be sure to visit Kingston and explore the beautiful historic sites!  You may even learn about how the Delaware and Hudson Canal brought this city to life.
