Project Summary
The preservation and restoration of the Historic Friary and Saint Francis Chapel at Graymoor integrated our project goals with a sustainable vision to respect what has come before us while embracing the future.
During the first phase of the project, we created a building assessment to help understand what work was required in order to preserve and restore the Saint Francis Chapel and the Historic Graymoor Friary. Once the building assessment was completed, we helped prepare different shingle, paint and masonry options that were historically appropriate for the chapel. Afterwards, we provided bid drawings, documents and construction administration services until the project was completed.
EcoBuilders, Inc. provided the construction services for the Saint Francis Chapel.
Long-Term Collaboration with the Franciscan Friars
Alfandre Architecture partnered with the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement over several years on a series of meaningful restoration projects. Our work focused on preserving the Historic Friary and Saint Francis Chapel at Graymoor—honoring their rich spiritual and architectural legacy while integrating sustainable practices for long-term resilience. The Friary dates back to the early 1900s, and the Chapel was dedicated in 1912.
Comprehensive Assessment and Thoughtful Restoration
Our efforts began with a thorough building conditions assessment to evaluate the structural and material state of both buildings. This informed our approach to historically sensitive restoration strategies.
We collaborated closely with the Friars to select authentic materials—shingles, paints, and masonry finishes—that aligned with the original aesthetic and craftsmanship. Historic paint sampling was completed by Jablonski Building Conservation, and selective investigations along with archival research guided our decisions.
Sustainable Material Upgrades
One of the key restoration elements was the roof. The original wood shingles from the early 1900s had long been replaced with asphalt. Working with the Friars, we opted to replace the asphalt shingles with a modern synthetic “slate” made from recycled materials—combining historical accuracy with sustainability and durability for future generations.
Additionally, we repaired masonry and installed new coping stones manufactured by Kingston Block to maintain the building's structural integrity and visual consistency.
Integrated Design and Construction Services
Alfandre Architecture provided full architectural services, including bid drawings, specifications, and construction administration to ensure a smooth and successful execution.
Our sister company, EcoBuilders Inc., served as the General Contractor, managing all aspects of the restoration. Their meticulous craftsmanship was instrumental in bringing the Friary and Chapel back to life with both beauty and integrity.
